- Motorola PEBL Rose Bloom for Valentine’s Day

Motorola PEBL Rose
It really has to suck for you gals who are into technology. You deserve more than just pink gadgets. Because you are smarter then they give you credit for. You deserve high end specs and “pretty” that comes in a variety of colors with an elegant design. Sadly, this new Motorola basic phone fits the usual stereotype: pink with regular specs.

The design however is a little nicer then the usual offerings. It’s subtle and elegant. It still has pink, but it’s discreet with 3.5G. The Motorola PEBL Rose Bloom will be available in Korea from SK telecom. No word on price yet. We know that it features a touch sensitive external panel, a 2 MP camera, a 3.5 mm audio jack, Bluetooth and HSDPA.

What do you think ladies? Are gadget makers getting better at giving you what you want?

- Samsung Armani Night Effect now available in the UK

Samsung Armani
It was previously announced that Samsung’s Armani Night Effect would be available for 300€ on November 2008 in Europe. As for other regions, we have no idea. There’s some good news for people in the UK however. The Samsung Armani Night Effect is available now in the UK, from January 9th 2009.

The phone comes with 2.2-inch AMOLED display screen, 3.2-megapixel camera, 120 MB internal memory, microSD card slot and supports HSDPA/GSM network. It’s by no means the top of the range in handsets, but it’s focus is on the beauty of simple design and ease of use.

The Night Effect also features Emporio Armani branded backgrounds and menus, as well as a music recognition service powered by Shazam. It will be sold exclusively by Vodafone and the Phones 4 U group.

- Barack Obama branded cellphone

Obama branded cellphone
A Kenyan cellphone company has released a Barack Obama-branded cellphone. The red and blue cellphone is covered with fun phrases like “Yes We Can” all over it. The company, Mi Phone, is calling it the Mi-Obama. It’ll cost around $30 there. You may or may not know, Obama’s father was born in Kenya.

Needless to say they are a hot seller. The product in it’s first week of availability has already sold over 1000 units in Nairobi alone. The Director of Mi-Fone says, “The coming of the new President of the USA is an auspicious moment for all Kenyans and the people of Africa. It is our pleasure to be able to launch the Mi-Obama phone as a memento that will always stay within the user’s hearts and minds”.

Can we sell Obama branded cellphones to the locals and make a ton of dough? Yes we can!

- Motorola Tundra now on sale

Motorola Tundra
AT&T decided to add another model to its rugged push-to-talk-compatible lineup, in the form of the Tundra from Motorola. This one has been available on Rogers for awhile. Some features include: 3G, 2 megapixel camera, stub antenna, AGPS, QVGA display, and microSD expansion.

It’s built to Military Standard MIL-STD 810F specifications to withstand the toughest abuse. So go ahead mistreat this bad boy. It just keeps going and asks for more. Great phone for those who like to be rough with their gadgets.

Nothing real earth shattering, but a solid tough phone.

- KDDI 007 mobile phone

KDDI 007 mobile phone
Hardcore fans of James Bond have another piece of gear to add to their growing collection. Sure, you have the laptop, you also have the James Bond villain watches, but you don’t have this phone.

KDDI will release the limiited edition W63S cell phone with a special 007 Quantum of Solace design from AU. The handset is priced at €110 with a contract and features an internal 2.7 inch organic EL WQVGA display with an external 1.1 inch organic EL display, 100MB internal memory, 1Seg support, EZ FeliCa, and has a 3MP shooter.

Now for the all too familiar bad news. This special edition phone is only available in Japan. How many times have we heard that?

- Ruslan Kogan working on another Android device

Android
We weren’t sure what would happen to Ruslan Kogan’s dream of building his own Android phone after Google apparently told him the Agora’s design wasn’t up to it. We were a little bummed, to be honest. Well, there’s a new model in the pipeline, and according to Kogan, his company is in the process of redesigning and launching an improved Kogan Agora.

This new phone will overcome the app compatibility issues that kept the original model from launching. Who knows how long it will take, but judging by how quickly he was able to get the first one out, it may just be a few months.

- Acer DX900 : A rebranded E-Ten handset

Acer DX900
It’s unclear if Acer’s upcoming DX900 smartphone that is actually a rebranded E-Ten Glofiish DX900, is Acer’s much hyped new smartphone. The company is likely still keeping most of their newly developed items under wraps. But if this is the phone they were talking about, then color us disappointed.

All the innards are unchanged: Dual SIM support, GPS navigation, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a 3 megapixel camera and a 2.8″ VGA touchscreen display, all powered by Windows Mobile 6.1.

- AT&T to offer the LG Neon

 LG Neon
The LG Neon probably looks familiar, that’s because it’s been released before as the LG KS360. They’re both pretty identical, with a full QWERTY keyboard, 2.4″ touchscreen display and other functions. Your only bonus here is the added AT&T logo on the front.

The LG Neon is targeted at youth whose only communications with others are through texting. No word yet on pricing and availability yet, but we should know soon should you be itching to text with this thing.

Maybe it’s just me, but it looks like a cheap toy. Kids don’t want to text on a cheap looking toy

- More LG Arena KM900 details

LG Arena KM900
Yesterday we took a look at LG's somewhat familiar Arena KM900 phone, and now more details are available, though The LG is still keeping a few things to themselves.

Looks like this one will feature GSM/UMTS/HSDPA connectivity, a high-resolution 3-inch 800×480 touchscreen display and mobile TV. Apparently the phone measures only 11.5mm thick, just a tad slimmer than the iPhone. Folks in Europe may get it as soon as next month from T-Mobile Germany. Stay tuned for more on this one.

- Nokia E63 Phone (E71 Clone)

Nokia E63
Today Nokia dropped an E-bomb on the world with the (completely random) announcement of the E63 smartphone. Essentially it’s a budget E71, with the exception of a couple nice features aimed towards the consumer market. Since it’s an Eseries device, it still retains business-y features such as the ability to switch work/personal modes. More details inside.

In a nutshell, here’s the differences between the E63 and E71:

Nokia E71
Size : 114 x 57 x 10 mm, 3.2 megapixel camera

- Archos to release Android phone/tablet

Android phone
We’ll probably hear more about it at MWC, but Texas Intruments issued a press release about Archos’s use of the OMAP3 processor in an upcoming “Internet Media Tablet” that runs on Android and doubles as a phone. There aren’t any pictures yet, but the spec sheet reads like an upgraded Archos 5.

Some features include a five-inch screen, up to a 500GB hard drive, a battery that will give you up to seven hours of video playback, and Flash support. The whole thing in a package just 10mm thick. They even mention HD video playback.

This could be a really sweet Android device when it launches in the third quarter.

- Bitstream announces open public beta for BOLT mobile browser

BOLT mobile
One of the biggest problems on many handsets when it comes time to surf the Internet on the go is the browser offered on the phone. Many mobile web browsers force users to view websites in a way that makes navigation difficult and runs the surfing experience we are used to.

Bitstream announced today that it is offering a free public beta for its BOLT web browser that promises to allow users of high-end and low-end cell phones alike to surf the web with a desktop like experience. BOLT allows users to view full desktop style web pages and to zoom in on sections they want to view closer.

The browser promises to be 25% faster in normal use than other browsers and as much as 50% faster in many circumstances and to reduce battery usage. The magnification technology sounds a lot like what the iPhone uses to allow easier web page viewing.

- BlackBerry meets the Optimus Keyboard

This interesting concept comes from designer Billy May. The OLED Blackberry is a combination of a Blackberry 7130 and an Optimus Keyboard. This OLED Blackberry was designed for the Mozilla Phone project, and obviously it takes the best of both devices and creates this stunning concept seen above.

The OLED keys, just like on the Optimus Keyboard can be programmed and change their look. It looks stunning and the minute you see it, you realize that you are looking at a device that has some actual richness of personality and could provide a richer experience.

Would a phone like this interest you?

- Samsung, T-Mobile announce 8MP mobile

It is also said to be easy to share photos taken on it with others via direct postings to popular online photo sharing Web sites.

Non-camera functions of the Memoir include a touch-screen interface, virtual QWERTY keyboard, multiple messaging capabilities, digital music playback, assisted GPS navigation and Bluetooth. The Memoir will only be available through T-Mobile.

- BlackBerry Storm price drops to $99 on Amazon, no rebate required

BlackBerry
Looks like the touch screen BlackBerry Storm has dropped to $99 on Amazon with no rebate required. Previously the price had been $249.99 with a $100 rebate, which brought the total to $149.99. It’s probably a result of Amazon competing against Verizon’s own buy one get one free sale going on through March 31, 2009.

If you don’t need two BlackBerry Storms, then why not head over to Amazon and get one for $99 (after a 2 year new subscriber agreement). I guess this should make anyone who wants one very happy.

No paperwork to fill out. Nothing to mail in. Just drop some cash and get your phone.

- LG Arena KM900 gets official

LG Arena KM900
Finally, after all of it’s teasing, LG has officially announced it will launch the LG Arena KM900 flagship at MWC 09 in Barcelona. They also announced some new features, while confirming Wi-Fi and A-GPS capability. The LG Arena will also support 7.2 MBps HSDPA data throughput.

It will come with “Dolby and Divx technologies… and feature audio and video technologies never before seen on a mobile phone”. The real interesting thing is their new 3D S-Class user interface: A cube-based layout that will give you four customizable home screens for direct access to all features on intuitive, touch-based 3D menus.

The cube interface is interesting, but once it gets all full of your apps etc, we will have to see how it runs.

- Samsung M7600 phone with Bang and Olufsen sound

Samsung M7600

You’ll also get a DJ scratching application that will let you add effects and even record, so you can be the man at parties. The phone could be available as soon as May of this year. We should know more when MWC kicks off.

- Review: OtterBox Blackberry Curve case

Blackberry
The folks over at OtterBox, protectors of gadgets for the active and accident-prone, gave us a chance to try out one of their defensive products to see just how well it holds up. In this case, OtterBox sent us a protective case for the Blackberry Curve, a device I have with me day in and day out.

Since the case from OtterBox is protecting something I own and depend on daily, we did not put it through the usual drops, dunks and vodka-proof trials that we would normally do. But, despite this we can tell you that this case blows away any other protective case we’ve had our hands on, for any mobile device.
Blackberry
We thought the best way to describe this protection was to take you through a quick tour of encasing the Blackberry Curve:

For starters, you need to still be able to press that QWERTY keyboard. To address this OtterBox created a molded, flexible membrane that is molded to fit around not just the phone but each individual key, and leaves a small hole for the track ball. When using it you can tell the membrane is there, but if you get it on straight its not noticeable by much.

Once this is applied, you can snap your phone into a hard plastic shell that encases pretty much the entire phone. It has a clear, flat plastic window for the display and leaves the keys open to expose the previously added membrane. There is also open ports for all the buttons, camera lens, speakers and ports.

On top of the hard plastic shell applies another case, but this time more rubber like. It stretches and snugly fits around the hard plastic case both holding it together and providing a soft case for drops and bumps. This rubber “glove” provides raised sections for pressing buttons without exposing the actual buttons. It also has pieces that can “fold” out and be put back in for exposing the ports, only when you want to.

In addition, the case comes with a holster and belt clip, designed to hold the device tight… real tight. Be sure to place the phone in the holster with the screen facing in. It will fit in the other way but you will notice that it will not stay put nearly as well. The holster is also made of a hard plastic giving another layer of solid protection at your hip.

Smartphones like Blackberry’s and the like have been traditionally synonymous with indoor office use, but they being found more often attached to individuals with more active roles and the phone itself is often just not built for it. The case from OtterBox is not marketed as waterproof but it has to be pretty close.

The downside is that it does have the exposed trackball but that one is pretty hard to get around while still maintaining its functionality. It also makes the phone quite a bit more bulky, and with the holster it is easily more than twice as thick. But, if you want the advantages of a smartphone such as a Blackberry Curve and lead a more active, or just plain clumsy lifestyle, you’ll be doing yourself a favor by taking a look at one of these cases from OtterBox. The case comes in black as we show here or a black and yellow model, both retailing for just under $50.

- Samsung C6625 with Windows Mobile, QWERTY keyboard

Samsung C6625
Samsung has unveiled it’s latest phone, available very soon unlocked from Expansys. You can pre-order the handset for £249.99. The Samsung C6625 features a 2.6 inch non-touchscreen display with 320 x 240 pixels resolution, Tri-band GSM connectivity (900/1800/1900 MHz connectivity), HSDPA 2100 MHz connectivity, a-GPS, Stereo FM radio with RDS, Stereo Bluetooth connectivity, a 2MP shooter with video recording, 100MB internal memory and a microSDHC memory card slot.

The battery will give you enough juice for up to 420 minutes of talk time and up to 300 hours of standby. It’s kind of like the Samsung BlackJack, but with a more rounded look. It’s aimed at business users.

No word yet on when it will be available.

- BlackBerry Gemini 9300

BlackBerry Gemini 9300
BlackBerry has yet another model to satisfy all of you email addicts, the BlackBerry 9300, also known as the Gemini. The 3G smartphone features some of the following improvements: Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Tri-band UMTS/HSDPA, Larger and better resolution display, Faster processor, Silver exterior ala BlackBerry 8830, and a Rounded keyboard.

No mention of Wi-Fi and GPS in the Gemini, but we assume they are in there. No word on price, but we should see it in Q4 of 2009. Q1 at the latest. It seems obvious that RIM is looking to transition all their devices to 3G over the course of the next year, which is a good thing.

- Sony Ericsson Hikaru unveiled

Sony Ericsson Hikaru
Here is the first leaked picture of Sony Ericsson’s new Walkman-branded slider phone with metal housing. Known as the Hikaru, the music phone will be officially announced on February 15th 2009, before the MWC 2009, in Barcelona.

Some specs include a 2.6 inch display, an 8MP camera, Walkman player 4.0, stereo speakers, dedicated music keys, a 3.5mm headset jack and 8GB of internal memory. There’s no word on pricing yet, but it will be released in Q2 of ‘09. That’s what we know right now.

- LG Arena KM900 reveals multitouch capabilities

LG KM900
Looks like LG isn’t going to have any secrets left where the Arena KM900 is concerned by the time Mobile World Congress comes around on Monday. They’ve released some more info, mostly having to do with multitouch capabilities for image and web page zooming and the like.

It features a dedicated multimedia chip and names for each side of the interface’s 3D cube. Those names are: phone, widgets, shortcuts, and multimedia. Get this. The UI “took 100 man years to develop”. Chuckle. At this rate, we will learn all there is to know before Monday.

Stay tuned. They apparently want to get all the info out so they can take it easy for MWC

- Alcatel + Lego = Lego phone

Handphone
Alcatel and Lego teaming up to make a Lego handset? Earlier this year Lego and Digital Blue announced combined efforts that would yield a variety of Lego-electronics aimed at kids. The announcement included details on a digital camera, a walkie talkie and an MP3 player. The functional toys would fall into an affordable $20 - $60 price range.

Now Alcatel is apparently jumping into the mix and the trio is planning to get cell phones in the hands of children using Legos. This piece of Lego-electronics is rumored to be released by this summer along with the rest. Not sure yet if you’ll be able to connect a few of these Lego handsets together or not.

It would be great if you could use the pieces to create your own unique phone

- T-Mobile U.S. Launches BlackBerry Curve 8900

The time has finally arrived in the U.S. for T-Mobile customers wanting the new only to the United States BlackBerry Curve 8900. All the rumors have been confirmed. The price under a new 2 year contract is $299 with a $100 mail in rebate. You can purchase the phone outright without contract for $499.

We have heard from many sources including my local store manager that shipments have been limited to 5 per location much like the launch of the BlackBerry Storm on Verizon. If you want one be sure to be at the store at opening. I have also been advised that shipments of additional 8900s should be arriving in stores later this week.

If you want to purchase online follow this link. Let us know your experience purchasing the latest BlackBerry.

- Samsung Blue Earth Phone is made from water bottles

Samsung Blue Earth
Samsung’s upcoming Blue Earth smartphone is a little different. In front you’ll find a touch screen, while the entire back takes advantage of the space with a solar panel. If you can believe Samsung, they are claiming that the panel produces enough electricity to place a call any time you need to.

We’ll believe that one when we see it, but as far as eco-phones go, this one is interesting. Keeping energy in mind, the phone includes an Eco Mode, which adjusts screen brightness and deactivates Bluetooth. Not only that, but most of the phone is made from recycled water bottles. Both the handset, and it’s charger are free from harmful substances.

There’s even a built-in pedometer that encourages you to walk and not be a polluter. So this is a serious eco hippie phone.

- Acer’s dual-side, dual-cam touch phones

Looks like Acer’s smartphone strategy at Mobile World Congress will involve at least two handsets. The DX650 would be a unique dual-sided phone with a dedicated number pad and small screen on the back to make calls easier. It will sport a 2.8-inch touchscreen and Windows Mobile 6.1 providing full app support on the phone’s front. The DX650 should also have GPS and a camera. 3G over HSPA and Wi-Fi are assumed.

The X960 looks like a more conventional 2.8-inch touchscreen phone and is known to have a fast 533MHz ARM processor and a front-facing camera for video calls to complement a back 3.2-megapixel shooter. It also runs Windows Mobile and carries HSPA-based 3G, GPS and Wi-Fi.

More details should be made public with the start of Mobile World Congress next week.

- Samsung OmniaHD to feature 720P HD-video capture

According to SamsungCentral, Samsung’s newly announced OmniaHD will be the world’s first cellphone to record 720p video. It will have a 3.7-inch AMOLED screen, which should be decent for the HD content it will record.

That’s really about all we know if you take their word for it. It likely also has GPS, Wi-Fi, plenty of built-in storage and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Those are basic features, after all. No word on what OS it will run, but we would like to get one of these in hand.

We should learn more this week.

- Sony Ericsson unveils Idou

Sony Ericsson unveiled Idou today, it’s new high-end device, which runs a Symbian operating system. Idou features a 12.1 Megapixel camera, xenon flash and a large 16:9 touch-screen. Looks like a real winner.

As of now the Idou has no model name, but will be available in selected markets from the second half of 2009. The official website just launched.

We’ll know more soon. We think this one looks just awesome

- Sony Ericsson’s “Reese” flip QWERTY smartphone?

If the above picture is to be believed, Sony Ericsson will soon be releasing a new swivel QWERTY called the “Reese” that features one-click access to all of “your favorite networking sites.” There aren’t many other details beyond this.

Therefore, we aren’t quite sold just yet. The large portrait screen would allow you to view several messages of any one kind in HD. If it exists, it’s too early to pin down an OS, but it is possible it could be Windows Mobile or even Android. But honestly if this is real, it isn’t that exciting.

It might even be a fan render. Time will tell.

- Handphone is slightly ridiculous

Remember when you were a kid and you played with fake phones? Or maybe you played with an imaginary phone, holding two fingers to the side of your head. I have news for you, you didn’t look as ridiculous as this guy.

The Handphone concept makes you look like a borg taking a business call. It sits on your hand, with a few wires and fingers leads, and turns your fingers into a portable cellphone device. You navigate and control the phone using natural gestures and voice commands. For Borg technology, the LCD on this thing is pretty lacking. No wonder Picard kicked their butts.

“I am Locutus of Borg. Resistance is futile. Hold on a second while I take this call.

Eten glofiish M800
